It is the rare book that provides as much enjoyment to adults as it does to teens. While the journey undertaken by school children could be compared to C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia (which the author admits to being an influence)or even the Harry Potter series, it would be unfortunate to simply dismiss this book as being derivative. The depth to which Scotto describes the children's personalities, thoughts, and their individual paths of reason is not found in the works of Rowling or Lewis. Scotto describes each character's struggle with (or dismissal of) the evidence they face with such detail that one feels the author is describing his own personal journey. This wonderfully written metaphor encourages the reader to passionately seek truth and to adamantly stand firm in defense of truth even in the face of ridicule.
The enjoyable pop culture references notwithstanding, Devon Dibley and His Golden Key The Adventures at the Haverford School will appeal to those who enjoy a thrilling quest and those who take to heart the themes and challenges presented to the reader.
The story is interesting and also gets the thought process rolling. We need our young people to be more like Devon Finley.
